THE POETS ARE ALWAYS PRESENT

Effie Waller Smith was an African-American poet of the early twentieth century. Her published output consisted of three volumes of poetry: Songs Of the Month, Rhymes From the Cumberland, and Rosemary and Pansies. Her poetry also appeared in the publication, Harper's Weekly, as well as in various regional newspapers.

E'en the things we think repulsive,

The things we can hardly bear,
When with gen'rous eyes we see them,
A garb of beauty they wear.
